I really thought that it would tire them out, and they would fall asleep as soon as we got home. Instead, it seemed to invigorate them. When we got home, they both had a bath and I put them to bed. An hour and a half later, I could hear still hear the sounds of shelves crashing down and walls caving in with the occasional giggle or muffled scream drifting through the cacophony. Finally, they came wandering out to where I was biting my nails and wondering if I-just-left-them-alone-would-they-eventually-go-to-sleep, and attempted to pile on top of Winston and I. The fight for space was almost bloody as they tried without much success to stake out their territory. Finally, Monkey landed a solid hit on the bulls eye of Bear’s forehead, and after a minute or so of wailing he passed out. Monkey took the opportunity to practice her wrestling moves and some square dancing steps on Bear’s prone form. Then, for much needed refreshment she took a few swigs of my soda and used the rest to wash the tray and seat cover of Winston’s swing. She’s so resourceful! After head-butting Winston during the split second I looked away to check on Bear’s breathing, she then did a little work on her restoration of the sitting room by making sure that every toy she owns was placed strategically in a main pathway. She’s very quick when she does this. She simply goes to her toy box and throws all the toys contained within over her shoulder. It’s amazing how quickly she can cover the space! Then, finally, after a few conferences with her father and I, she agreed to go to bed on the condition that I turn the television on to a cartoons channel. Being weary and in a certain amount of pain, I agreed and within a few minutes she fell asleep.

I wonder how resilient a baby’s brain truly is? I hope for Winston’s sake that the brain is as miraculously self-healing as I’ve been told.
