9/13/2004 06:04:55 PM|||Amy|||Monkey's birthday started roughly the same way as Winston's. We all woke up, we all sang Happy Birthday to Monkey. But, this time, I had gone present shopping beforehand and wrapped a significant portion of Monkey's presents the night before. (The night before Monkey's birthday, I went to a friend's house so that I could wrap gifts without an audience, and my friend made cookies for Monkey. I took the cookies home to her and gave her 3. She, then, took them to the craft table my father has - and yes, this table is expressly forbidden to the kids but I didn't see this in time - and painted them with nail polish or some kind of chemical. I never could track down what she had used because even though I could smell it, I couldn't find an open bottle. My Monkey is crafty, indeed. When I asked her why she did this, she replied so that Wilwum wouldn't eat her cookies.)

I worked that day, but left in enough time to race to Bear's school and pick him up. Bear and I picked up Monkey's cake too, but mostly the four of us - Winston, Bear, Monkey and me - spent the rest of the afternoon playing and not really doing anything productive. When it came time for dinner, I bought them "crabby patties" from the local Wendy's and tried to balance the death burgers with canned green beans. My brother came over just as we were finishing dinner, and we had ice cream and cake. My mother even managed to make a rare appearance in the kitchen for the party portion of the evening.

Monkey loved her presents. She ripped into them with wild abandon. Bear was pretty disgusted with the assortment of dolls etc, but then Monkey opened her last gift which had been shipped to her by her auntie in San Francisco. This was a collection of costume wings, which represented butterfly, bee and lovely black moth wings complete with head band attenae. Bear loved these, and spent most of Saturday buzzing around the house as a bee. He tried again and again to get Monkey to wear a similar set of wings, and when she finally said she would - he tried to put them on her. He came to me for help, but Monkey wouldn't let me put them on her. When Bear said to her, "But, [Monkey], you said you would wear this!" She replied, "Well... I said no again."
