Posting just for the sake of posting

I finally remembered my password tonight so that I could login and post something for the first time in, what? a month? Except the problem is that I am not really feeling inspired to write anything. So, here’s a brief recap of the daily minutae in the basic order in which it occurred in the life of Kanga.

My dad couldn’t pee.
So, my brother and I took him to the emergency room and spent most of the night there with him.
The ER nurse put a catheter in a part of the body that I don’t like to think of my father having and strapped a pee bag to his leg.
My dad saw a doctor a week later.
But, the doctor tried something that didn’t work and my dad still couldn’t pee.
So, I took him to the emergency room and spent most of the night there with him.
Emergency rooms, even in the suburbs, are pretty neat places to be at 3am on a Saturday morning.
He got a new pee bag.
He walked around with the pee bag strapped to his leg for about a month.
Then, he had surgery and the doctors roto-rootered his prostate so that he could pee again.
My sister came and visited us while he recovered from surgery.
Thank God for my sister.
Because my patience with my father ran out about 31 years ago.
Winston had her first ever dance recital.
She was so damn cute.
It was a tap dance routine.
She tapped and she danced.
She didn’t just stand there and cry like some of the other kids.

Monkey’s recital is in a month.
She had her formal recital photo taken yesterday.
She wore a ton of make-up and I did her hair.
She was very pretty.

Bear is becoming an adolescent.
I am very worried.

I’ve been riding my bike more.
I haven’t lost any more weight.
That kind of sucks.
But then I haven’t been eating less either.
I’ve finally kicked my buttered bread habit.
I had to let the bread get stale and oddly discolored first.
And that somehow worked.
Another department at my place of employment tried to recruit me.
I thought about it real hard.
Then declined the offer.
It was pretty neat to have a ‘you like me. you really like me.” moment.
I’m not totally convinced I made the right decision.
But for reasons that have very little to do with the experience the position might have provided.
I got to go to Game 6 of the 2nd round of the Stanley Cup play-offs in which the Dallas Stars and the San Jose Sharks contended for a spot in the Western Conference Finals. The Stars finally beat the Sharks in the 4th overtime period,
and won!
My friend and I had been standing for most of the 6 hours we were there. It was 1:24am when that puck was finally in the net. We were so happy and so excited that we didn’t notice how tired we were from all the standing, cheering and kissing. I kissed my friend repeatedly to encourage a Stars win.
It worked!
I had blisters on my feet the next day.
I’m worried that Detroit is going to sweep Dallas in the Western Conference Finals.
I hope not.

That brings everything up to date. Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals is tomorrow night. I’ll be on vacation next week. I am going to spend the whole week taking and picking my kids up from school, and spending stress free time with them in the late afternoon and evenings. I am planning on cooking meals without processed foods. In between the dropping off and picking up times, I am going to ride my bike and go to the gym. I might even do a little cleaning and organizing at home. But I don’t want to make too many plans and then break them, so I’ll leave that last one as a possibility.

Game 7

What will happen tonight?  Will the Canucks wipe the ice with the Stars for the amusement of Vancouverians, or whatever people who live in Vancouver are called?  Or will the Stars emerge victorious only to go to the next round against the blood thirsty Red Wings?

Why, I do declare, less than four minutes left in the first period and Lundqvist, the rookie scored!

I am going to tell you a little secret.  I love Vancouver.  They’re scrappy, they are.  I love the Stars more, and I dread what Detroit might do to them if they get to the semi-finals.

The heart of Vancouver has just experienced an adrenaline flood.  Oh, Henrik Sedin.  Couldn’t you have let Turco keep this shut out going just a little longer?

We’ve just had two really silly penalties leveled against us in quick succession, and the Canucks scored on the second one.  As much fun as it would be to blog about disappointment, I think I am going to retire to the couch and hope for an equalizing goal.

Huh.

Turco was pulled at the end and the Canucks took the lead by two additional goals.

The season is over for the Stars.

Game 6

I couldn’t put the kids to bed before 7pm tonight no matter how much I wanted to, so I am just now really watching tonight’s game and holy guacomole! the Stars are up by 2 on a (as yet) shut out game. This is really great. Chances are good that Turco will be around even if they lose this series in what will hopefully be at the very least, game 7. Thank God because my imagination doesn’t stretch very far these days. The thing is - if the Canucks don’t score tonight, this will be Turco’s 3rd playoff shut-out. I’m no hard core hockey fan, but that seems a pretty respectable accomplishment to me. So, even if they lose in game 7 (and God willing, not tonight), then at least they can claim 3 shut-outs and a dramatic come-back rally.

Oh, wow. Turco just made franchise history with 3 shut-outs in a play-off series.

AND THE STARS FUCKING WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Loop d’loop

Oh Excedrin Migraine! How do I love thee? Let me count the ways!

I woke up this morning barely able to peer out of my left eye, swollen as it was by what appears to be a Quasimodo-ish allergic reaction. And then, my head began to pound. I came into work with a pair of sunglasses glued over my eyes and complained to my lovely and wonderful office mate, Alisha, of my malady. That’s when she whipped out the Excedrin Migraine. I took just one, and already the rosy-colored world embraces me in her warmth and love.

The Stars won last night!!! The amazement, the thrill, the love of it all.

I’m still thinking about defecting to Canada though. The weather is probably not as good for bike ridin’ as it is here, but I know there are people who don’t let little things like ice, snow and rain keep them off their bikes. If they can, I can! I did live in that region for a couple of years a little over a decade ago. I remember one snow fall, one icing and a hell of a lot of rain, but the summer months were gorgeous. It’ll be fine!

Die Another Day, But Not Tonight!

Perhaps I am employing a certain degree of pessimism, but I expect tonight to be the last night for the Stars to play until the pre-season starts in September. It’s game 5 of the quarterfinals. The series score is 3 Vancouver, 1 Stars. Vancouver only needs to win tonight’s game in their own arena and they are off to the conference semi-finals.

One problem is that Vancouver loves hockey. Canada loves hockey. They love hockey the way people in Texas love football. Unfortunately, hockey fans in Dallas are in a minority. Tonight’s game started with a large, fat man in silly period clothing singing “Oh, Canada”. We have Celina Ray, an American Idol rejectee, singing for us. Canadians are just way cooler about hockey. So, being a Vancouver fan and watching this game in the Vancouver arena, is probably really super amazingly cool. Being a Stars fan and watching their games at home lacks some of that coolness. Celina Ray, for God’s sake? Come on.

Anyway, now that I have alienated Celina Ray fans and pissed off Stars fans and possibly, offended Vancouver fans, I am going to commence with a small degree of live blogging while the game is in progress. But, first, I have to tuck my two little girls into bed. Letting them stay up to watch a blood bath of a hockey game seems less and less of a good idea.

It’s much later now. I’m a tiny bit contrite to admit that I slept through the first, second and most of the third periods. I snapped awake in the third just in time to see the Stars almost score a really flukey, friendly fire goal against themselves.

(I’m thinking of moving to Vancouver now. What a great city. Pretty. Lots of Canadiens. Cool hockey team… Luongo, the Swedish Stack [the Sedin brothers].)

Today wasn’t a great day by the way. After getting out of the shower this morning, it appeared as if I were using my right eye to peer through a kaleidoscope. Then, my vision got a bit blurrier and then I had a big, massive headache. I somehow staggered into work. Then, left after a few hours to stagger home. On the way home, I think I hit or drove over a stray bumper that was casually laying about on the highway. The resultant head jerk and shock to my upper body didn’t seem to jolt the headache away. In fact, just the opposite. I glanced at the front of my car when I arrived home and didn’t see anything, so I shrugged it off and went to bed. I seem to be better now, but I look like hell.

Okey dokey smokey pokey. 2 minutes left in regulation, still no score.

Regulation is over. No score. Good God, I wonder what the overtime is going to be?

Holy bloody God. I can’t believe it. The Stars scored in overtime!

Back in Dallas for Game 6 on Saturday!
